Back pain has a way of stealing the things you love — a round at Nanaimo Golf Club, a hike up Mount Benson, an afternoon of pickleball, or simply a good night’s sleep. At Atlas Chiropractic & Body Balance, we help people across Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island get out of pain and back to the activities that make island life worth living.
Whether your back pain came on suddenly after lifting something the wrong way, built up gradually from desk work, or has been a quiet companion for years, we’ll help you understand what’s causing it — and build a treatment plan to fix it.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Back pain rarely has a single cause. Most of the patients we see in Nanaimo fall into one or more of these categories:
Muscle strain and tissue injury — often from lifting incorrectly, sudden movements, or pushing too hard during a weekend hike or game.
Poor posture — long hours at a desk, repetitive forward bending, or carrying tension in the upper back and shoulders gradually pull the spine out of its natural alignment.
Disc issues — bulging or herniated discs can compress nearby nerves, causing sharp pain, numbness, or pain that radiates down the leg (sciatica).
Joint dysfunction — when vertebrae lose proper motion, surrounding muscles tighten and inflammation builds, leading to stiffness and pain.
Sports and recreational injuries — golfers, runners, hikers, and pickleball players are especially prone to lower back strain from repetitive rotation, impact, or overuse.
Pregnancy and postpartum changes — shifting weight distribution and hormonal changes commonly cause lower and mid-back discomfort.
Workplace and motor vehicle injuries — strains from lifting on the job or whiplash from a car accident often present as persistent back pain weeks later.

Symptoms We Treat
Patients come to Atlas Chiropractic with a wide range of back pain symptoms, including:
- Lower back pain (lumbar pain)
- Mid-back and upper back pain
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
- Pain that radiates into the hips, glutes, or legs
- Sciatica — sharp, shooting pain or numbness down one leg
- Muscle spasms or tightness
- Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or specific movements
- Chronic, recurring back pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments
If your back pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder/bowel control, seek immediate medical attention.
How Chiropractic Care Helps Back Pain
Chiropractic care addresses back pain at its source rather than masking it with medication. Our approach focuses on restoring proper joint motion, reducing inflammation, and rebuilding the strength and mobility that protect your spine long-term.
A typical care plan at Atlas Chiropractic combines several proven techniques:
Chiropractic adjustments restore mobility to joints that have become restricted, easing pressure on surrounding nerves and muscles. We offer both traditional manual adjustments and gentle, precision adjustments using the Ultralign Spinal Treatment System for patients who prefer a lighter touch.
Laser therapy reduces inflammation in soft tissue and accelerates the body’s natural healing process — particularly effective for acute injuries and flare-ups.
Shockwave therapy targets stubborn, chronic pain by stimulating blood flow and tissue repair in areas that haven’t responded to other treatments.
Custom exercise and mobility recommendations help you maintain results between visits and prevent recurrence.
Custom foot orthotics, when appropriate, address postural imbalances that originate at the feet and travel up the spine.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment includes a thorough assessment so we understand exactly what’s driving your pain before recommending treatment.
We’ll start with a detailed conversation about your history — when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting your daily life. From there, we conduct a physical exam covering posture, range of motion, joint function, and neurological screening. If imaging or specialist input is needed, we’ll let you know.
You’ll leave your first visit with a clear understanding of what’s causing your back pain, a personalized treatment plan, and — in most cases — your first treatment that same day.
Insurance, ICBC & WorkSafeBC Coverage
Atlas Chiropractic accepts patients with ICBC (motor vehicle accident) and WCB/WorkSafeBC (workplace injury) claims. If you’ve been in a car accident or hurt at work, please obtain a claim number before booking and let our front desk know when you call.
We also offer direct billing for most extended health insurance plans, with the exception of Blue Cross and Green Shield. Chiropractic care is not covered by MSP, but most patients use private or employer-sponsored health benefits.

I have honestly struggled to find a good chiropractor. I’ve seen many other ones throughout the years and never felt better. But finding Dr Whyte and Dr Shook have been a life saver. Dr Shook gets my lower back pain. And Dr Whyte always gets my neck pain.
I’ve never had this kind of relief ever. I have arthritis in my neck and lower back and have always struggled with it. But both Dr Whyte and Dr Shook have helped me feel a sense of relief.
I really like this clinic and Dr.Travis Shook is professional and helped me with my shoulder pain. I definitely recommend Atlas if you need Chiropractic adjustments
I began Shockwave Therapy with Dr. Shook a few weeks ago and I am thrilled with the remarkable progress of my recovery. Dr. Shook’s expert guidance on sports movement played a crucial role in facilitating my healing and enabling my swift return to the field. After enduring six months of pain and limited mobility, I was able to engage in batting practice after just three treatments. Dr. Shook’s supportive encouragement and practical movement tips yielded impressive results. I will highly recommend him to anyone struggling with pain. The office and staff maintain a calm and welcoming ambiance.
